What should I expect from my headshot session?

Hopefully, in this post I will go over everything you'd need to know ready for your shoot. We'll choose locations and a colour scheme that suits you.

So... What should I wear to my headshot session?

Truth is you can wear whatever it is you want, but please be aware, that cheaper clothes that have been in your wardrobe for a while will more than likely not look great on camera. If you want to use your old clothes, make sure they are plain tops without bold patterns. Darker colours are usually better. The brightest part of an image needs to be you. Brighter colour tops can be distracting so keep them dark!

If you don't have a wardrobe you'd be happy with, how about buying something new? The investment really does help, however, there is always the option of purchasing something new and sending it back afterwards. It's easy enough to hide most tags during a headshot session and just send the clothes back afterwards. After all, 90% of the images you see in advertisements wether it be in magazine or online, the clothes will either be borrowed or re-sold.

Where will my shoots take place?

Your session will most likely take place on location. I will travel to you and set up camp. I work mostly with natural light, but also carry portable lighting systems with me in case the lighting doesn't 100% play ball. Prior to the shoot, we will have a quick discussion about where you are based and have a discussion about what area's that are near you we could shoot in. Alternatively, I currently do have access to a large disused unit in Llan Ffestiniog where we could use if you want to come to me. But be warned, it's pretty chilly in there! :P

Do I need to wear makeup?

Makeup should be kept to an absolute minimum. Your headshot needs to look like the real you, or you risk your casting agencies not hiring you. Don't worry too much about blemishes. Blemishes that look like they wont be there in 2 weeks time will be removed from your final edits.

What about my hair?

Having your hair right for your shoot is important. But it's a little more complicated for girls than it is guys. If you are someone with long hair and plan on cutting your hear short, please book your shoot after you cut your hair. It wouln't make any sense at all completely changing your look just after your headshots are done. Same goes for colouring your hair too.

Guys:

If you want to get your hair cut before your headshot session, I wouldn't recommend doing it the day before your session. Our hair tends to take a few days to grow into it's style.

Girls:

Volume is always good when it comes to, but don't go Bon Jovi on us. Unless of course thats a style you've been rocking for a while and is getting you work. Your hear should frame your face. Also, we will start the shoot with your hair down and work our way up to ponytails or hair up if you need some that way. I would also advise against getting your hair cut or coloured for 2 weeks at least before your shoot. This way, if any slight mishaps happen, it will give it time to slightly grow out or into place.
